33kV Terminations: Common Failure Points and How to Avoid Them

33kV terminations are higher consequence, less forgiving, and typically run inside stricter controls. Failures usually trace back to preparation errors, contamination, incorrect stress control, moisture ingress or poor interface condition.

33kV terminations are higher consequence than 11kV — the same failure mechanisms apply but the energy involved, the cost of failure and the complexity of the environment are all greater. Most termination failures trace back to controllable factors: preparation errors, contamination, incorrect stress control, moisture ingress, or poor interface condition at the termination point. This guide explains where failures start and what good looks like on a 33kV termination job.

Where Termination Failures Start

Understanding the root causes of termination failure makes the prevention straightforward. The most common failure points are:

  • Insulation damage during semicon removal — the XLPE insulation surface must be undamaged. Scoring, nicking or rough transitions create local stress concentrations that initiate failure under operating voltage
  • Contamination trapped under control layers — fingerprints, dust, moisture and semicon particles all compromise the interface between cable and termination components
  • Incorrect stress control — wrong positioning of the stress cone or incorrect build-up geometry creates electrical stress concentrations at the screen edge
  • Moisture ingress — water ingress during installation, particularly in outdoor or damp environments, compromises the insulation interface and accelerates degradation
  • Interface issues at bushings and connectors — poor mechanical connection at the equipment interface, including incorrect torque on connectors and poor sealing at bushing entries

What Good Looks Like on a 33kV Termination Job

The conditions that allow a reliable 33kV termination are:

  • Correct cable data confirmed early — including conductor size, insulation diameter, screen type and cable construction. The wrong kit on site on the day of the outage is a serious programme risk
  • Correct kit specification on site before work commences — kit confirmed against cable data and the equipment being terminated into
  • Controlled work area — moisture and contamination exclusion throughout, environmental protection in outdoor installations
  • Clean preparation — correct strip lengths to manufacturer tolerance, smooth semicon removal, correct insulation surface condition
  • Mechanical integrity at connectors and interfaces — correct connector type, compression or bolted connection installed to specification
  • Coordination with commissioning — terminations accessible for inspection and test, handover records complete and consistent

Indoor vs Outdoor Considerations

Indoor terminations generally allow better environmental control — the work area is enclosed and protection from weather is easier to maintain. However, indoor termination environments still require cleanliness discipline and correct interface alignment, particularly at bushing entries into switchgear and transformer cable boxes.

Outdoor terminations introduce significantly higher risk from moisture and weather exposure. In outdoor installations, protection of the work area during preparation and assembly is critical — inadequate protection during the preparation phase is one of the most common causes of outdoor termination failure. The time between opening the cable and completing the termination should be minimised and the work area kept dry throughout.

33kV vs 11kV Terminations

The fundamental technique is the same — preparation, stress control, clean build-up — but the tolerance for error is lower at 33kV. The higher operating voltage makes stress control geometry more critical, the consequences of a failure are greater, and the outage windows to carry out repairs are typically more complex to arrange. The argument for taking more time over preparation and build-up is stronger at 33kV than at 11kV.
